Virgin Altantic Credit Card - Flying Club Rewards

Sorry, wasn’t sure whether to post this in Credit Cards or Holidays!
I was just wondering if many people have had any experience with the Virgin Atlantic Amex Credit Card and getting rewards from it?
I basically want to know how I can maximise the rewards I get with my flying club account. I may be missing a trick here but it seems that you pay double to achieve the relevant rewards
e.g. I have spent enough to obtain a free companion flight. A return flight for a random date from London to LA is about £750 per adult (cheapest economy). But if I want to redeem this free companion flight then I have to buy a different class of economy ticket (fully flexible economy) which costs about £1400. On top of that I’d still have to pay taxes for the companion.
It’s a similar story with upgrades it seems.
Has anyone found a way to effectively make these rewards work in their favour since I’m trying to utilise a mixture of points and rewards for a family of 4
