Claim for lost wedding ring?

My OH managed to lose his wedding band whilst swimming in the sea. We had our wedding rings made abroad from a reputable jeweller. His was platinum. However, we the receipt a) shows the total amount only and b) shows it in foreign currency. I think we are covered by our home insurance policy for items abroad but I am not sure how I can make a claim if i can't prove the exact value of the ring. Unfortunately, I never got it valued over here. :( Any ideas?

Perhaps you could visit a jeweller and ask them to take a look at your ring, take your receipt with you and he might be able to work out what the approximate cost for your ring would have been, therefore giving you an approximate value on your husbands. Perhaps he might even put something in writing for you so that you can pass onto the insurance company.
  • Hi hindi thanx but dont think it'd work as mine has 7 diamonds in it whilst his was plain band.

Where was the ring purchased from?
  • It was made by jeweller in czech. I still have contact with him and he'd be prepared 2 help but not sure if insurer'll accept foreign receipt or valuation.

but not sure if insurer'll accept foreign receipt or valuation.

Why don't you think they will accept it?
Do you have pictures of the ring? wedding photos?
I don't see why they won't accept the details just because they are foreign especially if the jeweller is co-operative and willing to provide details/talk to the insurer.

Have you spoken to the insurer yet?

How did he come to lose his ring whilst swimming? A ring shouldn't just fall off. There may be a good explanation but expect your insurer to ask questions about how it came to be lost.
  • He was swimming in the sea in shallow end and got sccratched by corals and as he went to put his hand down the ring slipped off his finger. It all happen really quickly. Maybe it got caught by coral. Not sure. He was focusing more on his scratched knee onky notied the ring moments later. Havent spoken to insurers yet. Worried they'll hike premium up as close to renewal.

I cannot imagine how an insurance company could refuse to accept a receipt for a foreign purchase. I think you are more likely to face problems with the insurers maintaining that it was not an insured risk, or that your OH did not take reasonable care, or something along those lines.

I think you are more likely to face question about the ring just "slipping off".
Rings are usually difficult to get off over the knuckle area. They can't just slip off unless they are very loose.
If they are caught on something it's extremely unlikely that they will be pulled in exactly the correct alignment to pull them off, in fact there will be a tendancy for them to catch and drag as pulling on one side will skew the ring.

Wearing a very lose valuable ring whilst swimming could fall into the category of not taking reasinable care.

I think you will face questions.
This is standard practice these days.

I don't think the receipt or value is an issue, but I think you can expect issues over the way the ring was lost.

I'm not saying you are lying, but that either reasonable care was not taken or the explanation is not clear.
