I'm struggling to understand what you're seeking. Is an iPod with speaker dock like B&W Zepellin an option?

Alternatively there are music players which access online music libraries like Last.FM, Spotify, Napster, Deezer etc. but don't hold any music themselves.

Depending on budget, there are players from Sonos, Squeezbox, Cambridge Audio which can play music downloaded and saved to disk on a PC/laptop. A realistic budget starts at £250.

An Xbox will do that, and a whole lot more if you introduce it to Slayers.

Ive got a Vita R4 (£550) Awesome sound quality. Plays cd, mp3, and wma cds, Ipods, FM and DAB and also has a USB slot which allows music to be played from a USB stick.

Ive heard good reports about the pure Avanti. (£270) Same options (not sure if can play music via USB but it has a usb slot) Also allows internet radio if you have wi-fi in your house

If you use Firefox then get the Video Downloader add-on. This will allow your husband to download his favourite YouTube videos to his computer and then watch them any time he feels like it without any of that annoying stop-and-start buffering.

I've been using Slim Devices (now Logitech) Squeezebox products for years. I've no hesitation in recommending them.

it does sound a bit like you are after a mp3 player/ipod and some good speakers or headphones, where you can rip your current CD's and then download any further music and then play it back as and when he wants.

to be honest although i prefer other players (mainly down to the fact sound quality and battery life is more important to me than ease of use and style) your 'safest' bet would possibly be a ipod due to it being pretty easy to use, has loads of accessories, and has its own dedicated music store to buy the music from
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Have a look at this weeks Gadget Show on channel 5 on their "on demand" service. They reviewed 3 music systems that alllowed you to stream music from your PC/Mac to other rooms in the house. Started at £60ish to £300. If that is any help for you
