Gas cooker - Splashback requirements

Hi,
The Gas Safe man who should be installing a new dual fuel cooker in our house has said that he can't connect the gas as the wall the cooker will stand against is just painted. He says that we need an inflammable splashback. Our preference would be to just leave the wall as it is as we plan to get it all tiled in the next few months.

However, I've now asked a few kitchen companies and DIY shops about what kind of splashback is required. None seem to feel that there is a requirement and splashbacks certainly don't have a kitemark or something that says 'meets gas safe requirements'.

Are we being fed a line? If we aren't, can anyone tell me what is the cheapest interim solution until we get the kitchen tiled?

Thanks for reading.
