Compare the Market Warning House Insurance

I just used the Compare the Market website today to get a house insurance quote and within minutes of trying a few quotes my telephone started ringing from companies that were on their list - telling me they'd seen me using the online quotes system and trying to sell me insurance over the phone.
I was pretty much appauled that Compare the Market either pass on my personal details such as phone number to these companies or that the companies themselves are using the home information to look up our home telephone number.
I've used comparison websites for years and this is the first time we've had someone call like this whilst doing an online quote.

Moneysupermarket do it as well. I stupidly put my business phone number in on a car quote a few weeks back and forgot to select the opt out box. Since then I have had a number of brokers and claims companies phone me up.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. I usually put a dummy name and address, and the sites own phone number and contact email.0

If you don't want to be contacted you have to make sure you tick or untick the boxes (as applicable).
Or just don't put in your real phone number / email address when you're just checking prices. If it is not a required element for you to get a quote, don't put it in or if they are insisting on this information, just make it up. Hopefully your phone number is not going to affect your price!
You can always amend the quote that you want to include the correct details.0 -
You need the correct address for both home and car insurance.
Fake phone and email are fine.
It's important to distinguish between details that are material for the quote and details that are merely for contact.
Correct address and postcode is a MAJOR material fact.
Even slightly different could result in very false quotes.
I rarely get harrassed by post by these people so it's not something to be too worried about.0
