Talking of British IP, mobile devices would be a heckuva lot worse if it wasn't for ARM . Everything from the Iphone to the Nintendo DS relies on British designed processors.... though none of that will be counted in manufacturing numbers.

Perhaps this will provide some facts on the myth of manufacturing decline:

I agree with pretty much the entire article but the chart is out of date and its pretty shocking to see the drop in 2008-9:

    UK manufacturing output in context
Bloomberg jpg for UK Manufacturing Production in the past 40 years.

Bloomberg weblink to updated numbers (currently 90.7) but with only a 5yr range.

    is it denon?
even so its not 100% british. check the chipsets
As per NN, my hifi is more a mixture of Linn, Rega, Naim, and a valve amplifier which I built myself (so I guess that doesn't count).

I can't check the chipsets on the valves, but they are EL74s in a classic push pull configuration if that helps? :)

I have a piece of English hifi which I bought 25 years ago, and which you can still buy today.

It works perfectly, and is serviced occasionally, providing money to the local economy

Is there any Chinese made hifi which has been around 25 years? Errm, thought not. We can build product the equal of anywhere, it's just that people want to spend £9.50 on their music system, presumably to free up an extra few quid for their mortgages.

Without being facetious hi-fi probably won't exist in 25 years.

true but as Thrugelmir points out, who now owns the IP and who has manufactured them cheaper, designs doesnt make the cash it only makes credibility

Slightly off track. But the acquisition of Volvo from Ford, by the Chinese was a classic example of buying knowledge. Rather than going through an evolutionary process.

Shame the UK doesn't manufacture tat. As it would do wonders for the economy. ;)

Not for peoples wages though, these are already being eroded at an alarming rate.

The future for British manufacturing lies in the same place as the recent past: industrial design, specialised chemicals, pharma, cars and the like. Stuff where you can add a lot of value and it is hard for people to come along and compete with you.

There's no point in paying people a couple of quid a day to stitch T-Shirts when even the Asian workers are getting thoroughly fed up with wages like that.

By that analogy we could produce wine and grow more crops, as it could also do "wonders for our economy".

Not forgetting advanced automation of course.

Food production is a good case in point.
