Manufacturing leads the way !

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11196091

I thought people were saying manufacturing is dead in the UK?

Just goes to show the ability we still have :)

Imagine what could be achieved if less graduates chose 'Australian Studies' or 'History of Origami' and did a degree actually useful in the workplace?

  • Really! I didn't think we manufactured much in the UK at all any more.

So if they are talking about a rise of 3.7% in manafacturing that could mean an extra £1000 to the UK economy. :rotfl:

Perhaps this will provide some facts on the myth of manufacturing decline:

I have a piece of English hifi which I bought 25 years ago, and which you can still buy today.

It works perfectly, and is serviced occasionally, providing money to the local economy

Is there any Chinese made hifi which has been around 25 years? Errm, thought not. We can build product the equal of anywhere, it's just that people want to spend £9.50 on their music system, presumably to free up an extra few quid for their mortgages.

Well, a quick read on wiki, (the horror, the horror) mentioned that while it make up 16% of national output and employed 13% of the workforce, it also accounted 83% of the export (In other word, they play big part in lowering the amount of trade deficit.) That was in 2003 though.

I was faintly puzzled when last year, it was mentioned on BBC news that UK is still sixth largest manufacturing industry in the world.

OK, so we don't make tat like the Chinese :) well here was the list in 2008.

It should be noted that according to Japanese study 55% of the important inventions in the world originated in the UK and that includes a high % in the last fifty years.

And who owns the IP now?

Shame the UK doesn't manufacture tat. As it would do wonders for the economy. ;)

Always good to hear positivity about our homeland. Shame though that the doom'sters will always find a way to pi$$ on anything good this country has ever done. It's only a matter of time until they see this thread and get spooled up.
