Decent gaming laptop for 500 - 600?

Ok, now we have established that a self-build is out of the question let's get back to some recommendations of laptops/desktops up to £600.
My first suggestion is:
http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_7741G_Core_i3_Laptop_LX.PT402.001/version.asp
Checking Google shopping it says it's on Amazon at £606. It has a dedicated graphics card (an ATi Radeon 5470) so will play most games but probably not on the highest settings.
Alternatively, there is a Dell available via their online outlet, DMXdimension, for £599, it's also a core i3, has an extra 1MB of RAM and the same graphics card as the Acer. Here's the link:
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N00N7046&dgc=AF&cid=5212&lid=122756&acd=7f952c1bf6c2403a58c98468154e2a39
Finally, let's talk desktops. I think it was Gonzo on here that suggested in another thread to take a look at DinoPC.com. Using their configurator you can get the following for £453.30 inc VAT
http://www.dinopc.com/shop/pc/configurePrd.asp?idproduct=902
Personally, for your needs I'd go with the desktop, it has a 3 year warranty and can be more easily upgraded when funds allow.0 -
Hi,
Thanks for those ideas knarf, will check them out and I really appreciate your help on this one. I know it's a bit like saying 'what car should I buy?' ie impossible to answer, but you've all had a really good go, thank you very much!:T0 -
No problem. Post back when you have decided what option to go for.0

Actually at the mo any purchase is looking less likely as DS seems to think that anything less than 24/7 screens use is an infringement of his human rights. There may need to be cold turkey, or at least a serious change of attitude, before another machine comes into the house! But it will be fine, it always is... in the end...0

Hi all, have finally decided to stop trying to buy something that's not designed to do this job and get a PS3 instead. Everybody happy, especially me who has spent less than a laptop would have cost, and gets her PC back! Felt the gaming laptop thing was like trying to get a rolls royce that would tow a plough - you probably could do it, but why not just buy a tractor?!
thanks again for all the ideas tho,

thats a good idea games like COD have dedicated servers for the ps3 so they will be always be able to find a match, plus the ps3 has a web browser built in and you can watch iplayer and youtube from it, definately a good choice for the living room.0
