Australia! Travel Advice please!

hello!

So I'm going to Australia - waaaaaaaaahoooooo!

The BF and I were planning on going from Sydney to Adelaide as he has family there. Does anybody know the best way? Would it be internal flight and would I be best booking flights in advance or when I get there? We'll be going to Adelaide around 20th November I suspect.

Thanks for any help! :j

  • Hiya - I hope you like Sydney more then i did!

You have a wealth of options to fly there - Jet star, Virgin blue and someone else who i cant remember..

you shoudl be able to get a flight for about 80 dollars each if you book now. maybe less

Allow a few days for Sydney. There's a lot to see, but do your homework first, and pick out the best bits. Don't forget the Blue Mountains either, they're within easy reach by train, and an ideal full day trip.

If you get the chance go to Melbourne. Completely different to Sydney, and quite old fashioned.
Ned Kelly spent his last days in Melbourne Jail!
Victoria Market for lots of goodies.
Take the tram down to St Kilda.
Watch a game of cricket at the MCG.

When you're in Adelaide give my regards to Colonel William Light, you'll see enough of him;)
Have a trip round the Barossa Valley, but ask one of your relations to drive, while you do the wine tasting
See if you can take in a trip on the River Murray.
Go and watch a game at the Adelaide Oval.
Get a photograph at the top of the world's biggest rocking-horse.
    www.virginblue.com.au
    www.qantas.com.au (sometimes works out cheaper)
www.tigerairways.com (fairly unreliable, low on-time arrivals rates, avoid if possible. Not much use from Sydney anyhow)

Unless you have a lot of time, flights is the way to go (the train is nice but will take a couple of days). Definitely book in advance (same as Ryanair/Easyjet etc). I had a quick look at Jetstar and they have flights for $89 (about 55 pounds-ish) for 20th November, assuming you will need checked baggage.

Ahem...I wouldn't plan on spending too long in Adelaide (the 'city of churches'), there is not loads to do (though the wineries in the Barossa Valley are nice).

Thanks guys that's all really good information!

I'm effectively stuck in Sydney for 5 days as BF is on a business trip and I am going out to meet him. After that we have from 20th November to 2nd December to do what we fancy which will include the Adelaide trip to visit his cousins and Aunty. They are all a great laugh so I am looking forward to seeing them again!

  • I would see if they all fancy doing a bit of a trip with you. Go to Port Douglas and see the Great Barrier Reef (only need one day for that, and a night stay over) and stay on for a bit longer to go on a day trip to Cape Tribulation (the rain forest) You can easily book day trips from either the hotel, or tourist information points at Port Douglas, and it is a beautiful place to visit.

Virgin Blue are a very good budget airline.

Sydney itself was very nice. We stayed in Manly and got the ferry every day to new destinations. My husband walked the sydney bridge while I looked on with my 8 month old. We went to Doyles fish restaurant in Watsons Bay. The aquarium was worth a visit. I personally wouldn't go to Bondi beach, a real let down.

have fun, it is such a lovely friendly country.

Tend to agree. Oz is a big place, and Adelaide itself isn't that exciting. But if you've got family there then there's a lot more to see than meets the eye of the casual visitor, eg the Wine areas, the River Murray. and the Soth Australia coastline.
It's certainly well blessed with British expats - not sure of the merits of that though;)

Don't feel stuck. Sydney is a great place.
  • Agree with the blue mountains and going up north if you can to the rainforest...
