As others have said then, these file should have been more securely stored but at the same time you should know that something in a folder called "personnel" isnt there for you to read and I doubt the file you were looking for is likely to have been in it (?)
Reading letters can give you an erroneous view on what has occured as they wont have contained the "full story" and it is harsh to judge a person or company on the basis of dismissal letters you "happen" to find "laying around".
Personally I think you have been caught doing something that you know you shouldnt have. Because you shouldnt have even been able to do what you did the company has over reacted to "show the seriousness of the offence" and now your feeling your nose is out of joint for having done it (or for having been caught - by the way, how did they catch you?). Personally I dont think would be a good reason to resign unless it is the straw that has broken the camels backAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

But then you haven't seen how the boss has treated me and that was the main reason to why I was intending on resigning. I have fully accepted that I shouldn't of looked, but I did out of complete curiosity as I'm sure most people would.0

Hello Bargainbooty and welcome to MSE

Of course it's not right to read files but really and truly, such files should be kept private. For what it's worth, I would of had a peek too. I wonder if the people who's names are in the files knew about the log they were keeping?
I personally think that what you did is not as serious as gross misconduct. A verbal warning would of suffice?
Anyway, if you can't bear the way your boss is treating you, maybe you should cut your losses and leave. I know it's difficult to hand your notice in but is the alternative really worth considering?
Good luck whatever you decide to do!"There are no pockets in a shroud..."0 -
Hi,
There is no way that a heart to heart could take place, he is much too obnoxious and arguementative for that. When I had my disciplinary I did admit I was wrong and apologised profusely.
Anyway, I actually love my job itself, just not the environment or the atmosphere (even a knife wouldnt get through it!) So i am still in a quandary
and dreading tomorrow morning as ever. 0 -
The best form of defence is always attack. Sounds to me like they know they are in the wrong leaving these files open to all and sundry who work there. I would be tempted to challenge the written warning . Somebody stuffed up with these files not being protected and it certainly wasn't you. As well as that some of the information could be actual liable which they are extremely afraid of getting back to the person whose file it is. Ypou could actually have the upper hand here, having said that i wouldn't want to work for a company as nasty as this is and imcompetentas well. Good luck finding a new job you are worth far more than being treated like dirt.0

Could you stay until you had a new job lined up, and use the 2 days holiday for interviews?Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
Just to let you all know, I resigned today as I could no longer take his totally unreasonable behaviour. He decided to change tack from being really nasty to being civil but picking at all my work, even completely undoing a day's work

It's a relief to know that it's finally over and I don't have to go through the shakes and retching before entering the place every morning..just got to tolerate it til mid-next week.
Thanks all for your contributions.
Kind Regards

Do you need to go back in?
I personally wouldnt bother. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I would also challenge the written warning on the grounds that they have clearly breached the Data Protection Act by leaving files, with other peoples details in, unprotected and available for anyone elses who works there to look at.
In fact you have saved them a court case as anyone could have then reported them to the Data Protection Commision (probably still could - hint hint - lol) so you should have been commended not warned!!!Noli nothis permittere te terere

I know, but what about sorting out my pay and holiday they owe me? I will have to go in tomorrow to pick up my personal belongings.
Hmm-Elise, that's probably what he meant when he said I could have them prosecuted by reading what I did.0
