Hi all
Have been reading these forums for a while now but would like some advice so I have decided to bite the bullet and post!:o
Bit of a long one so please bear with me. I recently started a job (few weeks) and the other day I was looking around the public hard drive, looking for some files. I came across a file with my name on, so out of curiosity I had a look. I then noticed previous employees names so I looked at those too and came across some unpleasant reading and correspondence between the company and these people. I know I shouldn't of looked, but curiosity killed the cat! (my job has a huge turnover of staff, I now know why)
Anyway, next day they disciplined me for gross misconduct (!) Basically they said that I shouldnt of been looking at these files, I said it was on the public drive, I didn't think they were so private and they basically said I had betrayed their confidence in me and basically gave me a thorough dressing down and threatened dismissal! Next day, they gave me a written warning stating that they are prepared to draw a line under it and they extended my probationary period.
Anyway, since then the boss has been treating me like something on the bottom of his shoe and I can't take anymore.
I am luckily in a position where i can afford not to work temporarily so I think I am going to have to resign. However, I am now horribly worried about applying for another job because of the reference thing! It has been an awful experience as I have never been disciplined and I don't think that what I did was gross misconduct.
Opinions and advice will be gratefully welcomed.
Many thanks and kind regards

Sorry for being a bit nosey, but what job were you doing? And did the 'gross misconduct' involve anything other than looking at the folders?
You could always resign and not give them as a reference - if you have only been there for a few weeks you could tell your next potential employees that you in fact took a month off as you havent had a break for a long time.0 -
sounds like its a good thing your not working with both companies anymore.
hope you find somewhere a lot more pleasent.
you could have both companies "done" for there ways, but you wouldnt want that on your record for future.

Job is just an office job and no it was just the folders on the drive, nothing juicy or serious?0

Hello wardrobe,
Not sure why you are thinking there are 2 companies involved? There is only 1.
Thanks0 -
Personaly, if I were in your position id leave..
You dont have to put up with it, its their loss if you go.. They probably think that they can treat you in this way, becuse you need the money...
As said, you dont have to even mention them on your CV at the moment, but you will if you stay
Good Luck

If I hand my notice in tomorrow, when will my last working day be?0
-
How long is your notice period? Should say in your contract. I am lucky, mine is only one week. I handed my notice in today and my last day at work is Friday.Sorting my life out to give a better life to my:heartsmil 2 gorgeous boys :heartsmil0

yes its 1 week but i wasn't sure if i had to give a full weeks notice?0
-
TBH, if you're not using them as a reference - what the hell can they do if you quit same day? (well, apart from not giving you any outstanding pay of course... but on balance, it may be a small price to pay...)0

Hmm yes Georgina, I can see your point. Thinking about it, they may just tell me to pee off anyway but I want to do everything by the book in my rezzy letter. So am I right in thinking that this friday coming will be my last official day?
Thanks!0
