Defective Routers ?

If my wireless router ever fails/becomes defective will connecting the hardwire Ethernet cable to it restore my internet service till I replace the defective Router? My router is a HUAWEI HG 5205.

It depends which part fails. In the unlikely event that failed component just affects the wireless circuitry then yes. But more typically it will die completely and you will have no access until you replace it.

That depends on what the problem turns out to be.

  • It depends on the nature of the problem. If the wireless portion fails you should be able to use the wired portion but an issue could effect both of them so there is no right answer.

yup either bit can go -I have a router in which the ADSL modem is shot. can;t connect to the internet directly but can be used to network stufff around the house (PCs networked hard drives, printers etc), works fine in wireless bridge mode too.

I imagine if you had a router with broken transmitter but working ADSL module you could do as you describe.

finally the power module could go (had this happen too) then nothing works and it can only really be used as a door stop :)
  • Thanks guys. This helped a lot :T
