Declaration of convictions for car insurance

I have not had my own car insurance since 2000 as I have had a company car, therefore I will struggle to get any NCD.
My main query is that I had speeding offence on 1/10/2002 but the conviction was not until 17/4/03. I know that the 3 points are no longer vaild and will be off my licence on 1/10/2006.
I am probably going to buy a car this week, but will not start the insurance until 2/10/06 so that it's 4 years since the offence, therefore next year I can say NO to the 5 year question.
The query is when do insurance companies class accidents etc within the last 5 years, do they count the 5 years from the date of offence or date of conviction?

The question is generally "have you had any convictions in the last 5 years or know of any pending?"
In which case it is 5 years from date of conviction as they havent asked if you have committed any motoring offences in the last 5 years (otherwise 99% of us would have rediculously high insurance
) All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Not quite true. When I gave up my company car I got a letter from the company just to say I had been driving accident free for x number of years. That was accepted by the insurance company and I got full no claims."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

Three points for speeding does not affect NCD with many (most?) insurers.
They are interested in claims .... and convictions that might make you a higher risk than Joe Average. A simple fixed penalty speeding offence is quite often ignored by insurers.
Simply declare it when you get quotes, so you know that the premium takes the points into account.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

My problem is that the company I worked from 1999 - 2003 no longer exists and the Insurance Co. Link had us on a group policy and did not have individual named drivers.0

Debt free chick I've jsut found that declaring three points on the back of a record of no claims for 10 years has just cost me an extra £476 my insurance co. are going to take £178 for last year becuse i hadn't told them sooner seems there is a clause in my policy that allows them to do that and the rest is the bump up on my renewal quote. So all those on here saying jsut declare your points and you will not be penalised have got it so wrong!0

I have found Liverpool Victoria the best for quotes if you have points on your licence. Providing you have not had a ban they do not load your premium. Saved my father £350!! all he had was 6 points but his previous insurance company loaded his policy even though he had been accident free for years.0

If your insurance has gone up by £298 this year then shop around!
Also if you think that having three points is bad, you could have been worse off: they could have cancelled the policy and/or refused to pay out on any accident, plus you would forever be obliged to answer "yes" to the question "Have you ever been refused insurance?"
As to the OP's question, I agree, he should declare them now and going forward because the convictions aren't spent for insurance purposes until five years from the date of conviction.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
Debt now: £14,100
Debt free day: October 2008 :beer:0 -
You must declare any CONVICTIONS within 5 years, regardless of when the offence was.
The question asked is "Do you have or convictions iuncluding including fixed penalty offences or any pending within the lkast 5 years" This includes ALL convictions by the way not just motoring. Many an insurance policy has been voided for no disclosure of criminal convictions too.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
Thanks chaps shopped around today with declared points very pleasantly surprised to have found quotes lower than my original renewal without declared points would have been! Renewed with Esure £353. There was even a lower quote form a company called Swift but I've never heard of them.
The price difference is amazing i feel £300 richer.0
