Kitchen Problem

Hiya, our oven broke down on Saturday. Its a single fitted oven. Anyway, we went out yesterday and purchased a double oven knowing it wouldn't fit in the space, but thinking we are happy for the space to be increased to fit it.
Today the man has been around to say that it won't fit in the space and if we take the plinth out at the bottom of the kitchen where the oven would be the whole lot of kitchen cabinets would collapse.
Is this right?
The main reason for me questioning it is that years ago ( probably 10) we had someone out, had them take a cupboard out of the kitchen and have them fit in a dishwasher. The dishwasher isn't a fitted type, its a freestanding, just it fits in the hole where the cupboard once was ( there is a cupboard to the right and left of it exactly the same as the oven. This has never collapsed.
I am now worried we have made an expensive mistake

Without seeing it first hand it would be difficult to say yes or no. The plinth is not load bearing and therefore should not carry any weight above. If he means the bottom 'shelf' of the cabinet that needs removing, then this creates one or two problems. Problems that a good joiner should be able to work around.0
