Help with internet access for laptop

Hi,
I have a standard pc at home which we use to access the web via broadband. My other half has just bought a laptop (for work related stuff). I have tried to connect to the internet with no success. I was advised by my ISP that the only way of doing this is thru a router. Is this true or just another way of helping me to part with my dosh?
Any advice would be appreciated.

If it has wireless, it's the easiest, and safest way..

If you want to share the broadband connection to you current pc, you will need a router. If you want it wireless, you will want a wireless router and a receiver for the laptop, if it does not have one built in already.
