Dell or IBM?

Hello
Hope this is the right place to post this. I have to buy a new laptop and went to a refurb place online where I have bought things from before and I have two choices: - a Dell Latitude D520 Core 2 Duo or an IBM Leveno Thinkpad T60 Core Duo
If people don't mind checking out the links I will put them below..
Now my question is - they are both priced the same now, but originally the IBM was priced on the site at £90 MORE. But I cannot see why it would warrent that higher price.
So what would people choose? I realise the specs are virtually identical but I cannot work out why the IBM was priced so much higher originally and does it mean it's a better laptop than the Dell?
Anyone with experience of either or with just more knowledge of laptops than me (which wouldn't be hard..lol) that can advise on which would be the best laptop, I would be very very grateful. Which would you choose?
Incidently I do not wish to upgrade or add hardware or even use the dvd rewriter.. I just want to run Messenger, play a few hidden object games and do accounts and shopping on it, nothing flash.
Thanks for your time and advice and if anyone can solve the mystery as to why the IBM was more expensive in the first place I would be grateful.

neither, both are overpriced, the battery probably won't work, operating system is 9 years old etc etc. You can get a new one for not much more.
There are some cheaper ones on the site which will do what you need.!!

Check that the price is not for support after purchase, the warranties on PC's are quite limited, I got a dell inspiron zino earlier in the year, after a few months the bsod was appearing too ften for my liking, after some 'fighting' getting past the call centres, dell eventually decided to get a courier to pick it up for a hard drive replacement, that bit was good, however fark did they try and sell me some maintainance pack at £100+ for a year or £150 for 2 yrs.
Looking at the latter part of your post, perhaps a netbook maybe more to your needs, I use my netbook running linux mint for all the things you mention .0 -
Thank you both - Closed - I had a laptop from the same company 3 yrs ago and the battery was fine for the whole time I had it though eventually it was down to just an hours power once fully charged.
My partner also owns a laptop from here and battery etc are fine.
Interesting to hear that you think they are both over priced though. Thank you.
Both laptops only come with a 3 month guarantee but as I said above, we have not had problems with either previous laptop we have bought from the site.0 -
What happened to the old laptop?
The source of the product is less relevant than the age and history of use when it comes to battery life. When you buy second hand/refurbed you never know what the history is.!!

The old laptops graphic card does not support the hidden object games I like, it was only a 255 (?) memory thingy and I had worn all the letters off the keys. lol. Oh plus it now takes 15 mins to log on. I am hard work on laptops, I run them for about 10 hours a day easily.0

15 minutes to login is easily cured, reinstall windows or post a hijackthis log and specs, ram, commit charge from task manager.
What type of hidden object games?
Replacement keys or keyboards don't cost too much!!

Have had to reinstall windows three times already in the last few months, I think the poor thing is just reaching the end of its life. And sorry, I really didnt understand 'post a hijackthis log and specs, ram, commit charge from task manager.'.. lol.. Told you I was not very computer literate.
I like the Hidden object games on BigFish but a lot of them will not play. Nor the time management games.0 -

Take one to bits. The IBM is built way better than the Dell. It also has nifty little features such as drain holes in the keyboard so if you spill your drink on it, it drains straight through to the desk below.
They'll do the same thing but the IBM T60 will take a whole lot more grief before packing up.0 -

Thank you!! That is very helpful.. As gorgeous and silver and pretty as the Dell is, I guess if the Thinkpad is a better buy it's worth considering. Will give this thread another 24hrs and see if anyone else has an opinion but thank you for taking the time to post.0 -

Hi,
I would go for the Thinkpad. I used to have a Thinkpad x61s which lasted me for two years, was really well built but I sold it when I decided to get a windows 7 laptop.
Are you on a £200 budget for your new laptop? - as you can go for a newer laptop model if you look around with the new windows 7 & more ram & hard drive space if you wanted?
Anyway, Thinkpad seems like a solid choice.
