we have some spotlights in the kitchen with halogen bulbs.
my son turned the light on today there was a big bang and the bulb exploded and glass went in to his face (luckily no harm done) and the fuse for downstairs light switched all the lights off
the last time a bulb went in the same fitting we had the big bang and all the lights went off but the bulb didnt explode.
we now have the bottom of the bulb in the fitting.
dont know anything about electrics so was wondering what causes this and if its worth calling my landlord out.
we have also had problems with some upstairs plugs that if you plug lamps into, the bulbs only last two weeks and an iron that cut the electric in the whole house, just this one iron, got a new one and it never happened
any ideas? dont like calling my landlord unless i really have to
thanks

Theres a fair sized clue here that all is not well.the last time a bulb went in the same fitting we had the big bang and all the lights went off but the bulb didnt explode.
You have a fault and the landlord should be sending an electrican to investigate pdq.dont know anything about electrics so was wondering what causes this and if its worth calling my landlord out.
Ditto.we have also had problems with some upstairs plugs that if you plug lamps into, the bulbs only last two weeks and an iron that cut the electric in the whole house, just this one iron, got a new one and it never happened
You have to call the landlord and get him to arrange an electrican to investigate IMHO.any ideas? dont like calling my landlord unless i really have to
thanks

Nonsense - I'm right. If this were a one off I'd be be tempted to agree with you. But OP has had a similar experience in the same fitting before. OP has problems with upstairs sockets as well. OP has a fault of some description which needs investigating.
Neither Google nor Wiki are synonyms for research.

Most lamps sold in this country are made in China-poor quality.and an iron that cut the electric in the whole house, just this one iron, got a new one and it never happened
A faulty iron, it happens.

Oh dear! Did you read this?frank.hopper wrote: »Your wrong.the last time a bulb went in the same fitting we had the big bang and all the lights went off but the bulb didnt explode.
The fitting went bang but the lamp did not explode or did you miss that. OP has a fault and whatever you say the safest course of action is to get an electrician in to check it out. Its down to the Landlord and should not cost OP a penny so I don't understand your problem.
We should be advocating the safest course of action for OP and that is what I am doing.

Oh and just to save on energy on this silly p......g contest you've started lets allow the OP to get a sparks in and then report back what he says.
If I'm wrong then I'll apologise.
If you are wrong will you?

Contact your landlord and please post back with the result of the sparks visit.

i've had this a couple of times and it is just the bulb, the one that banged and didn't explode with glass everywhere could easily just have been the actual bulb exploding inside the glass... it only seemed to happen on the low voltage b&q ones i had in the kitchen, the ones in my bathroom have never exploded...This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
