Query:withdrawal period from sales agreement?

Despite all the safety advice my elderly MiL will talk to any cold caller who phones her up - and now she has made an appointment for somebody to come to the house to "just" talk about fitting a stairlift.

She has absolutely dismissed DH's suggestion that they will be coming to SELL her a stairlift. Since her stroke she is very set in her ways and she now refuses to discuss it any further with DH & BiL.

If she does sign an agreement I think there is a fixed period in which she could withdraw - or does the fact that she has made the appointment affect her rights?

Could somebody point me in the right direction please.

You really need to get her to listen, you may not always know about a visitor. Have you looked into power of attorney. Its a consideration.

I know a lot of elders like their independence, but to be brutally honest, theyre just not mentally equipped for modern sales tactics. They often need somebody more savvy to make these judgements. It shouldnt affect her in any way negatively. The only effect will be she cant enter into agreements via pressure sales.

I couldn't agree more, unfortunately I'm "only" the DiL.

DH & BiL are facing the uphill task of persuading her to move somewhere better suited to her needs - her present property would need 3 stair lifts to reach her front door! - but she resists them as she 'knows better'.

Thank you for the link, that's exactly what we need to know.

  • No problem, glad to help. But like i said, if it becomes a major issue (her stubbourness) take a good luck at power of attorney.
