Central Heating System - No thermostat ?!

Hi all,

Just moved into a 50 year old house after last 2 were new-builds.

Needless to say its bit of a shock to do with some areas of our new home !!!

With the cool nights last week or so we thought we'd put the heating on to take the chill off and could not find the CH thermostat anywhere - we phoned the Estate Agents to get hold of the previous owners without any luck and needless to say we had to resign ourselves to the fact that there isn't one in the house !! I just presumed all CH systems had a control panel in the house - please correct me if I'm wrong !!???

So we felt pretty silly that we had never noticed there wasn't one and now have to go into the garage where the boiler is to switch it on and off and then control each radiator individually.

Forgive my ignorance and hence my forum question - is there an easy (and cheap !!) way to instal a thermostat in the house ??

Thanks in advance.

Is there anyway of adjusting the heating temperature on the boiler?

The answer will be a guarded yes because noone on here can actually see your system and how it is configured. You need to get someone in to give you a quotation. Have you got a programmer at least?

My old central heating boiler had a thermostat on it but nowhere else.It was behind a removeable panel.

My brand new boiler has no thermostat - it has a built in timer, a built in bypass circuit and each radiator is fitted with a thermostatic valve, so no thermostat is required.

Assuming you have a brand new boiler, unless it is a Vaillant with a VRC430 fitted on the front, it should have had a room thermostat fitted as standard.

This is a basic requirement under Part L regs.

Do you have TRV's on the rads? Room 'stats are certainly not standard fittings on older systems. How old is your boiler?
It's a relatively simple job to fit a wireless room stat, but you will also need to remove any TRV's in the same zone (usually in the hall).

  • Tell us the make and model of boiler. Some newer boiler models are really easy to retrofit a remote thermostat to, without an electrician. Some boiler models have terrible integral controls and you will need an electrician to fit you a Honeywell branded thermostat. One thing is for sure, you need a thermostat fitting.

A boiler stat is not the same thing as a room stat.

Our system was fitted around 10 years ago - the boiler has integrated timer and temperature controls, each radiator has a thermostatic valve, and there's no wall-mounted thermostat to be found anywhere.

We leave the boiler on full-time and regulate room temps with the thermo valves. If there's no 'call for heat' from the radiators, the boiler stops running, obeying its own temp control.
  • Googler, the temp control on the boiler is a safety feature, and is not to be relied on to contol room temperature. There are a few safety features to help prevent accidents and damage from occuring. If one fails it is ok because another will take over. You are using one of your safety features as a control, I believe they are called interlocks. Get a remote room thermostat or a wired thermostat fitted and have one of your TRV's removed where you situate your thermostat. I recommend a Honeywell CM921.
I know its works for years and the cost is gona sent you back around £300 minimum but its really worth the cost. If you send me the boiler spec I might be able to recommend a more specific thermostat.
