what type fuses in consumer unit?

  • Firstly if you are adding extra circuits it is really notifiable work, or should be done by a Part P registered contractor. The work does need testing to validate the installation and unless you have the gear to do this, it's very naughty.

Secondly, and lets just say I have a very strong inside track on Square D !, you may want to check the price of this old style RCBO from an electrical wholesaler, they are only supplied as spares and are very expensive. So you may find as mentioned above a new dual RCD consumer unit wouldn't be much different. The Qwikline consumer unit you have was replaced with Qwikline 2, about 6 years ago if memory serves me right.

Might be worth taking the plunge and getting it done properly, nothing like being able to sleep at night !
  • Just another thing, I've had a quick look at the new team showers link you provided.

They are a bit out of date I'm afraid, we've been using 230v for some time now. If you use ohms law then the 6mm2 cable for a 10.4kw shower isn't really on. The claimed ratings are also very misleading as cables have different current ratings depending on the type and how they are installed e.g. free air, clipped, covered etc.

I love the term "CONSULT A QUALIFIED PLUMBER OR ELECTRICIAN" they use on the website.
  • Hi Luap2411
Thanks for your reply. I have a 9.5KW shower and i remember at the time the electrician said 9.5 was okay on the original cable but not 10.5KW. The cable is in free air. This may not be the advice given now though.
I take your point about the price of an SquareD RCBO. I have had no problems with this unit but what make would you recommend and about how much would it generally cost for an electrician to fit one?
I was never thinking of installing a new circuit, only updating the MCB and RCD
    Thanks
