I also understood that fur sold in the UK has to be humanely killed, I'd still prefer not to wear it but I prefer to know what is truth and what is just myths bandied about by activists.

Frankly I am actually more concerned about Halal meat which seems to be widely available now in the uK. Again as a meat eater I am not squeamish but i prefer to know which meat is from animals dealt with humanely and which is not.

That's weird, I saw a programme the other day and the mink were gassed by engine fumes in a little chamber on the back of a farm vehicle. Dead in less than 30 seconds. Think it was called Kill it, skin it, wear it.
Apparently that is the standard way to kill mink, and it's the animal lobbyists who have spread the skinned alive rumour as skinning alive would spill blood and ruin the pelts therefore making them unsellable.

Sometimes it is done like that but even when that is the case sometimes the animals are not dead -which is not checked - and are just unconscious so are skinned but still alive and do wake up after the fact. I have seen horrific video of animals being skinned alive so I know this is not myth and even if it was it would not excuse the the horrific conditions in which they have to live. I think -but am not sure the exact percentage - that over 90% of fur comes from China where they have no rules on how the animals should be kept and killed but saying that I know that fairly recently there was a case in Britain of a fur farm being caught treating and killing their animals in a horrific way.

And for the poster who thinks mink should be saved, wait until you see a henhouse after one has got in. It will kill all of them.

Shame on the fur industry that brought them to the UK in the first place.

Tricky subject. A friend of mine is Jewish; he doesn't keep kosher (he likes his bacon butties too much!) but he says that the issue with halal and kosher meat is one of extreme delicacy since on one side you have animal welfare/rights activists and on the other you have a cultural issue that would be difficult to solve if you didn't allow kosher/halal meat to be ritually butchered. I come down on the "well, I don't want to be the one to have to solve that" part of the fence. He thinks part of the angst over halal is also to do with covert Islamophobia, and it's important I think we try and separate the two issues out.

I have a vintage fur jacket that was my grandmother's, but I hardly ever wear it even though I like the feel of it. It's only rabbit, which are so common as to be almost vermin, but I am not old enough to have grown up with people routinely wearing fur coats in this country. I did, however, spend time in Eastern Europe, where it's still popular (and sometimes necessary) to have a fur coat or hat, and there's no real getting around the fact that fur insulates better than anything that we can currently produce synthetically, and for cold climates it's still better to have a fur or sheepskin coat than a nylon parka.

The necessity of it in the UK though is doubtful.

Perhaps part of it... personally I had no problem eating halal chicken in Nandos Luton (do they serve it in all branches?) but with the media hoo hah recently I've found out how it's slaughtered, and it's now off my menu. I couldn't tell you about kosher slaughter... perhaps I should look into it.

My local BBC radio had a phone in on 'halal meat media frenzy day'. Sadly when asked, the best the Muslim callers could offer when challenged about animal welfare was 'But we pray over them' and 'How do YOU know they suffer'? Poor show really... because SOMEONE must have a believable theory for justifying the methods on animal welfare grounds...?!
