working tax credit conundrum

Hi folks,
I was unemployed at the start of this year for 4 months and worked part time for the last 6 months of 09. While i was unemployed, the job centre people put me forward for working tax credits, which i totally forgot about until i received just over a thousand pounds worth of cheques through the post. I called inland revenue to tell them that i thought they had it wrong as i am in ft emplyment now and between my partner and i, earn about 34,000. The guy got a bit narky with me and i dont think he listened to my worries as he set up a direct payment into my account insisting that the money was right. Still worried about it, i called back the next day and got a far more helpful person, i told her my problem and ran through mine and my partners earnings again, she said she would have a look at it. On friday past i got a letter from inland revenues detailing the hours me and my bf work, our salaries and a calculation of the money owed to us( in total over £3000). Can this be right??? I am too scared to touch the money so am putting it straight into my savings acc and i still havent put the cheques into the bank, even though i am assured by the letter that they are mine. Basically i would like to know what other money savers would do in my situation. Has this happened to others? Hope you can help! M

  • seriously! anyone?!
  • Do you have any children? It could be child tax credit. The system is complicated you would need to provide your age and BF age, hours worked, salary etc to get an accurate response. www.entitledto.co.uk gives you a good idea if you put your details in there.

    Hi folks,

You have to be working to claim working tax credit. Clue is in the title.

Thank goodness you are being sensible and not spending the money. It really doesnt sound as though you are entitled to it, certainly not on a combined wage of £34k.

If seems like HMRC are being useless as per. Maybe someone else can advise the next step to take..
