  • I was looking at these barebone PCs from Novatech earlier, and they may be your cheapest option if you are techie enough to add a couple of components yourself.

Add a cheap hard disk and cd-rom drive, and pick up a free monitor from freecycle (in fact I'm going to be freecycling an old 14" monitor myself later this week).

That way you could have a low end PC up and running for under £200.
  • Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • This link could be helpful also, but the delivery fee is about £25.

  • The Novatech one's probably work out cheaper but you'd have to put it together. So an alternative to that would be,

It's £235, without a monitor (you might also want to get some speakers). So adding a monitor would put you at around £300. You'd have to install your own operating system and software, but you might know someone with them which would save you paying for them.

I got my first PC from the Open University. I just rang them and asked if they had any second hand PC's for sale and I got one for £50 including delivery. I bought a modem for it (in the dial up days) for £25 and updated it when I could afford to as I went along. But it served really well as it was.

  • Check out freecycle, just put an old office pc on the local one and had loads of interest. It went to a lady for her grand daughter.

Alternatively try a local pc shop for a basic set up that could be added to if required at a later stage :)
  • i advise a 2nd hand one, maybe someone you know is upgrading? we have a few computer shops in our area that have 2nd hand computers at a reasonable price. i was lucky got mine from a friend who had a spare pc and got it for £100 suited my then 11 year old daughter... shes nearly 13 and had no trouble with it whatsover .least then you can maybe buy a brand new system when the time comes they learn how to maintain a computer or start doing more stuff..

Have a look at https://www.speedie.co.uk. I haven't tried them myself, but you can get a refurbished Pentium III 733Mhz PC, 10GB HDD, 128MB RAM, with CD-ROM & NIC for £39.99 inc. VAT.

You'll also need a monitor (I think speedie.co.uk have those too), a copy of Windows (or Linux), keyboard, mouse and possibly speakers.

Hi kenshaz - don't know if this any help but Acorns Children's Hospice have had a sign in their shop window saying "We now sell computers - only £190."
I don't know any details or if it's national but you could get a computer and help charity too! Maybe enough for a 10 year old.
Also I know that here in Warwickshire , most schools will lend you laptops - some rent them out. Hope this helps.
