Sweet pea questions

Hi - have grown sweet peas for the first time this year and they have been lovely (I cut some in a vase and my sitting room smells lovely)
Small question -they have little seed pods - can I use the peas in them to grow more next year? Daft question I know but I'm a novice gardener! Do you wait until they are a bit bigger (the pods) and do you have to open them and dry them out?

I'm so jealous - every year I try to grow sweet peas, and every year they don't come up, either in pots or in the ground, and I ADORE the scent of them.

I guess you should treat the seed pods like other seed pods - wait until the seeds inside feel hard and the pods are going brown and dried looking. The ripe seeds will be a dark colour, not green. Good luck with them.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?
If I'm over the hill, where was the top?

Let the seed pods go brown and dry, save the "peas" from within, you can get these started in a greenhouse from October for an early showing.
  • Most seeds sold are hybrid seeds, this means that their offspring will not necessarily have the same characteristics as the parent plant. Its fun to experiment with them, but if you definitely 100% want sweet peas like you had this year, then I would buy new seeds again. But you could try both!
