Travel insurance - buy together or separately?

I'm going to the US with my brother for just under a week. I've booked the hotel and flights for both of us (ie it's all been booked together as one 'itinerary' on expedia). Are there any disadvantages to us each booking our own travel insurance separately or should we book it as one policy, with the same insurance provider?

I thought it would be easier to each book our own as we are each paying for our own insurance and we have different requirements (e.g. I have existing - albeit minor - medical conditions and I think my brother is going to be taking more expensive items with him and may need higher cover for that).

Not actually sure you have any choice - most companies I know of will insure either individuals or couples/families. So you will land up with two separate policies even if you go for the same thing
