Return flight cheaper than oneway

Hey! I'm sure this may have been asked before, but i'm new to this site, so apologies. I was using this site to search for a cheap flight to the US as i am shortly moving there. During my searches i came across the British Airways website and discovered that if i booked a return flight to my USA destination, it saved me £180.00 than if i booked just the oneway flight. The outbound return flight was even the actual same flight as the one way flight. Now, i'm assuming there is some business reasoning behind this, but i was wondering if its perfectly legal for me to book the return flight and then just not bother getting my flight home? Surely the airline does not lose any money as they've already sold and recieved money for the homeward seat? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The one-way is more expensive because it will be a flexible ticket.
The return will be a non-changeable cheap ticket.
Just 'miss' the return leg.
They won't charge you for the missed flight.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Thanks guys. As i am moving i will be paying for my ticket using a debit card from a bank account that i will be closing when i leave anyway, so i'm guessing they won't be able to charge me.0

just check the visa requirements / conditions. after all, if you check in for your flight and they see that you have a residency visa, they might start asking questions.
however i must admit i have not personally booked anyone to do this, so no real personal experience.I used to be a Travel Agent Used to be a travel agent for 23 Years, but now out of the industry. However I will help with what i can.0 -
BA have been known to do so.
Despite this being bought up on a monthly basis, and knowing tonnes of people who have thrown away return segments I have never, ever seen / heard of someone directly who has been charged for a flight.
Yes, it happens on ferries. But if you say this a quick question - do you actually know someone it has happened to? Or do you know a thread on this board of someone who has actually been charged?
Just wondering as i've never seen hard proof of airlines charging.0
