Can a brand new key be reprogrammed to another car?

Short story:

My Renault had an intermittant immobiliser fault. The dealership said I needed a new key £108 + reprogramming £45. I ordered the key.

Have subsequently traded in the Renault (owned up to the fault before anyone asks), and no londer needed new key. Renault say that I can't have refund as the key was ordered to a chassis number and will only work with that car. Is that correct?

Might as well collect the key anyway as I've paid for it, but can I sell the key on Ebay to recoup some pennies? If not I'll give it to the garage who part-ex'd for me and they can get it reprogrammed.

    .

there are two issues, the mechanical key which has been cut to work with the door locks on the car (and ignition).... and the immobiliser

You don't say if yours has the mechanical key or is simply a keycard.

Rumour has/had it that the original card keys could not be reprogrammed. A locksmith on here suggested that had been "got around". Find out, or be carefull when you descibe the item for sale. ;)

Plus if it has a card key, it has the mechanical key incorporated into that.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Well there you go then, makes you wonder why the OP thought he could possibly be refunded after the key had been cut.

Sorry, I think my original post might have been confusing.

The 'key' that has been ordered isn't a card type, but a traditional style fob that holds the metal bit. The metal bit hasn't even been cut as the dealer told me I had to swap the metal bits out of my existing key.
