Got to smile, this vibration is really irritating !
Had a new hard drive put in the pc. Very pleased with it, computer so much quicker now.
The PC sits within a computer desk and when I turn on the computer there is quite a noticeable hum, thats ok, but there's also a vibration through the desk. It was not like this with the old hard drive. It makes me smile in that its as though the machine is going to hover off. Anyway I've put bubble wrap under the tower and it has not altered things much.
Any ideas then, I don't really want to move the pc out of the desk and onto the floor.
Also why has the new hard drive resulted in this vibration when the old one didn't ?

You could move the secondary drive to another mounting bay if you have one, see if that changes things.
Try running the PC with the cover off and see if you can pinpoint the source
Swap the positions of the primary and secondary drives0 -
Maybe whoever fitted it did not seat it right, did you get the new HD fitted locally, if so you could take it back and ask them to sort it.
I was going to include a joke about vibrating washing machines and getting your wife/girlfriend to sit on it but thought it may not be appropriate this time of the day

Maplin sell mounting screws with dampers on them - you may want to consider swapping standard screws for these..0

Had the same problem, I found that a suitably trimmed non slip mat that is used for cars works very well.
Home bargains sometimes have them going cheap, better that buzz!
That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Better to find the cause rather than trying to cure the symptom.Move along, nothing to see.0

vibrating washing machines
aaah happy days...
I digress, not brave enough to take back off machine but you never know. Have no doubt at all husband will not take pc back to shop as he's just happy the pc is working properly again so no point in asking him.
I like the idea of 'swapping standard screws'..........aaah happy days.
Thanks for all the advice .0 -
You need to take it back immediately, as it's clearly not securely mounted, it will only get worse and potentially destroy the drive and your data with it.
Take the side panel off (not the back!), boot it up and you will easily be able to see if it's vibrating and loose in the cage. Removing the panel take 30 seconds, 2 screws. No free lunch, and no free laptop

could even be an unbalanced hard drive internally and prob needs to go back to manufacturers if has been installed correctly. sorry but i used to work for a company in the uk and we had the contract for maxtor and i was a failure anlysis tech (the guy who worked out what was wrong) and if has been fitted correctly does tend to lean towards unbalanced drive inside without being able to have a feel. if you feel the outer case of the hardrive you will feel the vibration is alot worse to another drive running inside your pc. and oh yes the drive will fail without a doubt if is this just a question of how soon! i would suggest you get your husband to read this thread so he fully understands what is going on. i would also suggest keeping any important pics docuements on a flash key or dvdr backed up as you will lose any info on the drive. as drives come in for repair most get wiped thru the repair process in the clean room after work has been carried out this is done to fix the manufacturer software on the drive after the physical repair is carried out.
hope this helps you out0 -
There was a spate of 3x7 platter Samsungs that had an issue with excess vibration, if I remember correctly [ Xmas 2009 / 2010 ] they were 16MB cache. They were awful. If you suspended the drive lightly between thumb and forefinger they used to oscillate anti-clockwise, freaky to watch.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
