Tax Return E-Mail - BE AWARE!

Just a heads up. With the recent news of tax payments and the HMRC !!!! up with their new system, there is some e-mails going around in the usual malicious fashion.

I've received one today:-

From: service@hmrc.gov.uk [hmrc@globalnet.co.uk]
Subject: Please Submit Your Tax Refund

Dear Applicant:

Following an upgrade of our computer systems and review of our records we have investigated your payments and latest tax returns over the past years, our calculations show you have made over payments of 302.25GBP Due to the high volume of refunds you must complete the online application.

Your refund may take up to 6 weeks to process please make sure you complete the form correctly.

In order to process your refund you will need to complete the attached application form.

Note: If you are using Internet Explorer please allow ActiveX for scripts to perform all data transfers securely .

Regards,
HM Revenue & Customs

There is a zip file attached called Refund-Form.zip which is obviously unsavoury and the fact it mentions the ActiveX is a warning sign.

Since I don't fill out tax returns and HMRC don't have my e-mail address, I knew it was junk before looking at it. The "From" e-mail address in the [] gives it away further.

Just thought I'd warn you.:)

Also when a email has the "GBP" at the end of an amount can be considered a fraudulent scheme.

Doesn't the fact that its an email give it away??

HMRC are writing to all those affected.

    Just to echo Apples2.

R4 Moneybox programme Saturday 4th Sept, HMRC spokesman stated quite clearly that the only contact would be via letter, and to watch out for any scamming emails.
    Move along, nothing to see.

HMRC is hardly likely to be using globalnet.co.uk!

See their website page HMRC related scam examples.

It's best to respond via post rather the email. I hate calling 0845 numbers!

With due respect, this is the Techie thread, so while many people here would notice that, I'd guess the man in the street would just panic.

It seems strange that they know the exact amount of your refund yet they do not know your name! (ie "Dear Applicant")
