Car insurance just for weekend?
At the moment are car is off the road and so our own car insurance has been cancelled.
We have an urgent trip to make in 2 weeks and a neighbour has offered to lend us a car which he presently has up for sale. Thats if we can get it covered by insurance. He says you can cover a car just for a couple of days but Ive never heard of this myself.
Is it possible? Im a bit dubious about doing this.
Is it likely to be ridiculously expensive, its a 1.3 so not a massive car, but Im wondering if its a better idea just to go to a car hire and hire a car so insurance is automaticly covered.
Any opinions please.

yes you can day insure it for 48hrs just google short term car insurance, would be much cheaper than hireing 1..but what woul you do if the neighbours car sufferd a seriouse mechanical breakdown whilst in your care this wouldn't be covered by insurance? prob better to hire in my oppinion..ck0

I've used day insure before and they were pretty good. Though I seem to recall the excess was very high, so if I had crashed it, I'd have faced a massive bill.0

The other way to do it ( assuming your friend is still insured on his car ), is to get him to add you as a named driver on his policy for a couple of days. I did this recently for a friend who wanted to borrow my car, it cost about £10 to add him for a week.0

Slightly different scenario but when I took my car to the garage for a service I needed a courtesy car, because of my age the garage insure me on theirs.
I phoned my insurer (Direct Line) who added the garage's courtesy car to my insurance for the day. I would imagine other companies could do the same. (Also, and quite surprisingly, there was no charge for this! They reckoned I could do it 6/7 times a year without being charged)0 -

Unless the neighbour has his own insurance that he can add you onto as a named driver, and you are happy that the vehicle will not suffer a major breakdown, it is not worth the risk.
Hiring a car from a proper car hire company is much the safest way to go, and will probably cost not much more than sorting short term insurance for a car you don't own.0 -
Just to conclude this thread.
I did find cover with a company called 'dayinsure'. Cost me £22 and had breakdown cover included so all worked out well.
Thank you all for the help and advice.0 -
