Shares Investment Approach?

Hi all!

Fairly newbie investor here. Traded a few stocks with moderate success mainly as learning exercises. I'm looking for advice on progression? I need a trading Guru!

A bit about me: Young professional working in finance sector (hence my daring to venture). Willing to take calculated risk trading with both a short and long term.

The boring part is my long-term stances. Currently I use Halifax Sharebuilder to cheaply purchase shares in a variety of sectors using an averaging method. I also separately hold VIY, RBS and HAWK as long term positions purchased separately. In addition to this I utilise a multi-manager S&S ISA fund hoping the experts can outperform me!

I dabble short-term mainly on penny stocks with a taste for mining and exploration (highest risk I know!). I do have interest in technology companies as well but not as exciting :) Mainly do my research using this usual routine:
1. Gain an interest (forums/news/movers etc.)
2. Primary research (company accounts/announcements/investor reports)
3. Secondary research (information websites e.g. Stockpedia, ADVFN, Google finance (past mov't linked nicely to articles))
4. Decision to invest, loss limits & ceilings etc.

If anyone would give any suggestions for improvements to my trading outlooks and/or routines I would be very grateful! If you wouldn't mind stating your trading preferences and reasons that would be brill!

Also if willing to divulge how much time one devotes to researching there topics (why these topics?) and if you believe this is directly linked to your trading preferences? Currently swotting up on a few stocks that took my interest last week this weekend (my usual).

Hope all is well,
Coeus.
