Top-up meters will be about the same as credit meters but on a standard tariff.
But you can save up to 25% by choosing an online or other non-standard tariff on a credit meter.
So your friends are not correct.
The other advantage of a credit meter is that gives you, well, credit...by using a fixed monthly DD you can even out your payments all year around.

It totally depends on your tariff! Get your annual kWh consumption figures, put them into a comparison site, pick the best tariff and switch via a cashback site.
Don't use your monthly DD figures on the comp sites, as these are not as accurate.
