Top-up meters will be about the same as credit meters but on a standard tariff.
But you can save up to 25% by choosing an online or other non-standard tariff on a credit meter.
So your friends are not correct.

It totally depends on your tariff! Get your annual kWh consumption figures, put them into a comparison site, pick the best tariff and switch via a cashback site.
