If you look at normal handsaw (tenon say,rip saw, panel saw) the teeth never go right to the end of the saw
    They do on mine!.^
The curved edge of the floorboard saw is there to start a cut in the middle of a floor.Once started the straight edge is used.
Unless I misunderstand wouldn't the point on the saw prevent the skirting being cut by not allowing the saw to get to the bottom of the skirting?
Correct^.The tip of the saw will touch the floor before cutting the bottom of the skirting.
If you own a tenon or panel saw either will work.If you are worried about your floor or wall protect these with thin card.

    screwfix or toolstation sell em.
    Get some gorm.

I stand corrected on the Tenon saw Norman, your quite right, same as the Dovetail saw too, however many panel saws and rip saws the "Back " of the saw overhangs the teeth so the teeth don't go right to the end of the saw so its impossible to saw right to the end of the skirting board........:D

The saw in the picture is avaliable from rutlands.co.uk for £32.95.

Alternately, this, Irwin 15" 'Xpert' Toolbox Saw (Google it) or similar will work as well or better, cost much less and be much more use afterwards.

And I stand corrected on the end of the floorboard saw not cutting into corners. The end appears to be at 90 degrees to the straight cutting edge.

I need to cut out a section of skirting board without taking out the whole length of skirting board that is to say I want to lop off 3 feet from a 16 feet section whilst the board is in situ.

Is there a tool for this type of job?

    Thanks
    Reciprocating saw.

    Reciprocating saw.

This would only work if you are happy to cut the wall and floor!
