Just got my first Lappy. How do I connect it?

good ol' freecycle to the rescue.

Proud to say I have acquired a Sony Vio and it is trying to connect to my wireless. (It has built in wi-fi.)

Problem is that without digging through tons of boxes/paperwork I don't recall the password but vaguelly remember that by typing in some address (1.128.0.0 or something like it )into my main computer I can find the info I need without resetting the password Etc.

Can someone tell me how, please.

Also, how do people just connect to a modem from a 'Hotspot?'. Surely they will need a password, wouldn't they?

    If you look at your router, there should be a sticker on it that will say somthing like
    IP adress: 192.168.1.1
    UserID: Admin
    Password: Admin

    If you hook your machine up to your router with an ethernet cable, then enter the ip into your browser, you should be greated by a log in box. Enter the ID and PW on the side of your router into the box. This will log you into the router, the information you need should be on the first page, or a few clicks away.

    If you cant log into the router (not its wireless internet conection, but the actual router) beacuase at some point you changed the PW and cant remember it, there should be a reset button the side of the router, something you can put with the end of a pen. Hit that, then enter the info on the side of the router to log yourself in, but that will require you to set the router back up again.

    Wi-fi hotspots needn't have a password set.

    The default IP address of your router depends on the manufacturer. If 192.168.1.1 doesn't work, post the make of your router and it's easy to find the default IP, username and password. ;)

    Or, e.g. for XP, go to Run box, type cmd, press Enter, then at the b/w prompt, type ipconfig, and look for the 'Default Gateway' entry.
    Move along, nothing to see.

    Boy, that was easy. Just looked under the box and typed in the number and it connected. no password or anything.

    I am now typing this on my first ever laptop. Cool!!

    No doubt, I should have a firewall which should require a password buy I do like an easy life,

    Just one other. The laptop is a PCG-TR1MP Vaio.

    BOY is it a snail. s this machine renowned for that?

    Just ran Asqared and nothing to worry about. About to D/L spybot after first putting Online Armour in place. Back in about an hour :(

    "" BOY is it a snail. s this machine renowned for that "" look at msconfig, if it's new there will be loads of unessential cr4p running at startup and to which you appear to be already adding three to - make sure they don't run at startup and get rid of most that do.
