lost ring advice please

hi, first post. wondering if anyone can advise.

read all the similar post to see if this had already been asked but could not find the answer. long story short I was cleaning the guttering round the house I believe my ring has came off and and when down the pipe. look all around the house in the other places it may have came of but believe it has went down the gutter.

insurance has single item limit of £2500 which more than covers the item. the policy is with RAC.
it has:
building cover
home content extra accidental
damage for contents extra accidental
damage for building
legal expenses

but no personal belongings.

the guy I spoke to at customer service said he does not think it is covered as it was outside the house and i would need personal belonging for this. is this accurate?

quite annoyed if this is true as I have never claimed in over 10 years. and I am not completely sure if this is where it has gone but it is where I honestly think it has.

Thanks Craig

  • Hi Craig,

Unfortunately, alot of contents policies (even with accidental damage) still don't cover loss, regardless where it happened, the fact that you have a clean claims history doesn't alter this I'm afraid. Might be worth having a look through your policy booklet to check if loss is covered but if it is, it would probably be restricted to inside the home.

It might be worth stating to them that the loss was within the boundaries of your home. Some policies will cover items witin the boundaries but I'm not sure if the ring would be covered.

Get your policy book out and try to find the appropriate section. Have a look at the exclusions and see if you still have a claim. Sometimes the first person you speak to at your insurance company may not have the right answer.
  • Only unspecified/personal possessions will cover valuables. saying it happened in the home will not change the outcome.

OP - I suggest you call your insurers' claims department and then take things from there.
