How long did you look for before finding the house you bought?

For those on here who have purchased recently I thought it would be interesting to find out how long people were looking for before finding the house they bought.

My failed purchase was actually the first house I viewed. I did view another 3 houses before making an offer so I had something to compare it to. Six weeks into the process the vendor decided they wanted more money and when I declined to up the offer they pulled out.

I viewed the house I ended up buying a week later. It was the 5th house I looked at that week.

We're soon (hopefully) to exchange contracts. I think we looked at about 10 flats over a period of about a month before making an offer on the one we are progressing with.

I searched hard for more than 4 months and viewed 20 or more houses before finding "the one".

It was worth all the hard questions on what I could and couldn't compromise on, what I could realistically afford to buy, and where, the heaps and heaps of EA house details, the spreadsheets detailing each house with potential and what the +/- was on each one.

For each house I viewed I must have considered a further 50 online.

I had a wide search area and wanted to find a long term home so it was an especially difficult search for me.

In the end I found one that I totally fell in love with :)
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • Not long at all really. About a week, and it was the 5th one we looked at. We had been scouring RightMove for months though, so when we had our AIP, we knew exactly which houses we wanted to view.

I think I'd been looking on and off for about 1 year. Must have looked at about 50 properties. It seemed hard to find one where I didnt feel like I was compromising on anything, but I finally did. I guess if I was being really picky I've compromised on a driveway slighty, as the house I bought doesnt have a very big run up to it (which I would have liked).
  • This is an interesting thread, I've been looking for a couple of months now, it took a while to figure out what was really important and what was just a nice extra. Seen about 20 flats, made an offer on two but both times there was another buyer with more cash

Because we really want to live within about a ten minute walk of a particular tube station there's not loads of places on the market right now. Am optimistic our dream place will turn up in the next couple of months though...

We've been looking for about a year but have yet to find a house that ticks all the boxes for both of us, sadly. When we do find the right one we can go ahead immediately, but all we seem to see are houses costing around £250K that need a total rip out.

3 years....but wanted a house at the right location and price...we got both..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
  • Over a year on and off - made 3 offers, all accepted - and fallen through for on e reason or another. Now on offer four - fingers crossed.

I must have seen over 70 odd places in total!!

  • We looked at 2 flats in the same building on a Saturday and put an offer in on the second flat on the Monday. So all in all 3 days.
