Changing additional driver to main policy holder

Options
Hi I'm hoping someone can help me with this. My parents have always had a joint car insurance policy where my dad is the main policy holder. My dad is no longer able to drive and I'm looking to get my mum on a policy where she is the main policy holder. Because she has never held her own individual policy does that mean that she is ineligible for no "no claims" discount? She has been driving for 40+years so I would like to hope that this would be taken into account. Any advice would be gratefully received

If the policy has been in Dad's name, then Mum won't have any NCD.

See a local broker who may be able to get the existing NCD swapped over. Failing this, a broker should be able to get your Mum an introductory discount to reflect her claim free history.
  • Hi.

Now this is just MY experience , im not in any way saying that it will be the same for your parents as every insurance company is different.....

My husband was the policy holder , MAIN driver , registered keeper etc of our car....

Our insurance was with Budget insurance.

It then became obvious that instead of my husband using the car most often , that it was infact ME who was now the main user. For this reason i knew that to stay properly insured i would need to inform the insurer of the change.

I had NEVER held a policy in my own name and so i assumed that i would have zero no claims......

When i telephoned Budget to tell them about the change they switched me over to the policy holder AND the main driver and put my husband on as the additional driver....they did all this whilst allowing me the full 7 years ncd that i had accumulated whilst i had been the named driver on my husbands policy.

After a very short period of time i left Budget and they sent me out proof of the 7 years ncd to pass onto my new insurer.

Ask the company that insure your parents at present if they will allow your mother a discount as she has been a named driver for so many years.

The fact she must be 60ish will help bring her quote down, but she will be lucky to get any NCD from he current insurer. Unless it can be proven (in the form of NCD) 40 years of accident free driving experience, is the same as 40 years of accident prone driving in the eyes of an insurer.

We have just been through this. I waited till the policy was running out and then contacted the insurance company.
My husband was the policy holder and that policy was not renewed. A new policy was then taken out in my (the wife) s name and my husband had to write and say that he would not be using the NCD as he would no longer be driving and he wished to relinquish his NCD to me. It was done just like that, no problem what so ever. It cost me just about the same as his renewal quote. The only downside was
that for the first year I couldnt have the NCD protected but can do this next year when i renew.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Companies I have worked for have allowed NCB to be transferred from husband to wife and vice versa on receipt of a letter from the current policyholder. There should be no problem particularly as your mum has been the additional driver on the policy. Good luck!

This was our situation . Budget simply signed my husbands full 7 years of NCD over to me as i had been named on the policy the whole time. We didnt even need to write the letter , they just asked to speak to hubby on the phone and read out a decloration "I Mr *** **** give permission for my wife , Mrs ***** ****** to benefit from the full NCD accumulated on my policy" They then asked my husband to say "I agree" and that was that ........ 7 years NCD for me in the speace of 20 seconds lol

Within weeks i had then left Budget and used my NCD with my next Insurer.
