  • Hi, I have been following this forum since receiving a letter from Helploan last week dated 10th Sept. & have found the advice very helpful. On Friday 30th Sept I rang AF for the 2nd time after having left my info for a call back the previous day. I followed advice on this forum & did not press 1 when prompted. got through very quickly. AF advised me to write to MCO at Bressenden address with the CRN they gave me. I did this. They advised me not to write to the registered address at the bottom of the letter as they said MCO had moved. Have I done the right thing? I'm a bit concerned that I maybe shouldn't have contacted MCO now.

    Hi piglets3
I wouldn't worry too much about having written to MCO as Bressenden - many of us have done the same before the NFIB alert was posted on the AF web site. I doubt if anyone from MCO exists, far less is present at the Bressenden address. The important thing is that you have registered your fraud attempt and have a CRN from AF.:T

Hi Geomad, this is still current on their web-site:

"You are also being advised not to contact MCO Capital Limited directly."

Also I spoke with them yesterday and they confirmed that. They told me quite categorically that MCO was carrying out the fraud (that's the reason they can now allocate you a CRN) so that contacting them is pointless and might even give more ID data away. There are 8 people in the AF office so it is always possible that someone hasn't been made aware of the update.

Fully agree Grahamqat - but I sent off my letter BEFORE the NFIB alert was posted on the web site . C'est la vie!
Did you carry out a trojan scan?

Hi piglets3 - wouldn't worry too much about it. The advice changed around last weekend from contacting MCO to not-contacting MCO when AF finally became convinced that the letter recipients and not MCO were the subject of attempted fraud. If you've sent them a letter (with your address on) you've only confirmed you are at that address. I dont think that adds a lot of value to your ID for selling purposes, because many names/addresses are in phone books etc. They are really after things like DOB, bank details etc that the Helploan web-site scam attempts to get. Also many people were advised to write to them so there's probably a big pile of unopened letters somewhere.

Hi Geomad -dont know whether it was the Trojan you reported in an earlier post but I got so far through the Experian credit check log in on their web-site when Kapersky flagged up a threat. It was around the point where you enter your credit card details so for obvious reasons I didn't contnue. I had thought that would abort the whole input, strangely though I have had a stream of e-mails from Experian asking me to complete the credit check application. As the site has been hacked (or was at that time) I cant be sure where these follow up e-mails are coming from - I just delete them.

By way of updating, AF have now e-mailed written CRN on a PDF, a day after I contacted them, which seems very good. I'll print it out and keep it at home so that if we get a visit we can show it to the debt collector etc and inform him he will be associated with the crime report. We'll do this in a nice way if he's really big and from Liverpool 8.

Doesn't sound like a trojan Grahamqat - rather an alert re credit card use. I too stopped my online Experian application when it got to the request for a credit card number and received similar emails encouraging me to continue with application!!! I much prefer to use PayPal - that way, only one organisation has my credit card #!!!

Just had a callback from a call about 8-9 days ago to AF - from a young lady - I explained that I hade already registered but too the opportunity to ask if they were still recommending writing to MCO with CRN - she was adamant that that recommendation had been stopped and confirmed NFIB message re NOT making contact with MCO - at any address!!
I too was promised an email/written confirmation from AF but not yet received:cool:

Thanks for that Geomad - wasn't really clear what the warning was so I'm sure you're right about credit card use. You should get your written CRN tomorrow (as I did).

Incidentally, couldn't see why Experian wanted credit card details for a free service?
