    Very interesting theory grahamqat - have you passed this very distinct possibility on to anyone like NFIS or AF. The fraud mechanism may well be staring them in the face?
    That said, does your theory not require all of us who have been involved to have used the Helploan or balanceloan web sites? Or am I simply missing something?:cool:

  • Persuade a dupe in the UK they are getting a job of collecting payments from a company's UK customers and persuade them to hand over details of their account to receive money. They keep 10% and send on 90%. It happens all the time and many fall for it with scammer supplying dud cheques that he wants cashed and transmitted before they bounce. It has a low success rate but any success is pure profit and the scammer can send out thousands of offers a day. It's a game of percentages. If it didn't pay they wouldn't do it.

    In this case,then all the scammer needs to do is find a 'doppelganger' with the same name, to use their name and address and the dupes bank account. For a little extra work this version of the scam would be infinitely more productive even if half the dupes scammed the scammer and didn't pay him anything.

    Names, addresses and birth dates ? - easy peasy and the information is available legitimately if you pay, as we know. Otherwise there are so many databases with that information that it's no obstacle when big money's involved.

    Such a fraud would be defeated by simple security but for no reason any sane person could imagine they didn't bother. Scammers still target secure systems looking for a weakness, so an insecure one will be pillaged left, right and centre.
  • Further to posting link I am told the new website is using SSL (secure socket layers). This seems to imply the security of the old web-site is considered a problem, more so than the application procedure itself which could have been changed by modifying the existing site.
  • And talking of secure websites. have you seen that the MSE site appears to have been hacked in some way? See the 'Important' banner just above the posts.

    Thanks for the heads up Prudence2 (or is it 3??) - this is getting crazy - how many of these damned fraudsters are there out there? These idiots and crooks are going to destroy the internet - I'd better get myself a few more anti virus, anti phishing, anti everything packages!:mad:

    having taken advantage of Experian/CreditExpert's free 30 day membership (and then cancelled within 30 days) I now received the following offer from them

    Is this not a conflict of interest? This racket has to be stopped - and soon!!!:mad:

    Not surprised you're hopping mad Geomac! Presumably if Experian can tempt their customers into applying for yet more credit, Experian get paid when the credit provider carries out a check on you.

    They have clearly learned nothing from the MCO incident!

    Sorry Geomacl, didn't answer some earlier questions from you. I haven't passed any theories to AF or NFIB as they monitor this site anyway. The second answer I think is no, because the web-site designer would just take ID fraud info. He would probably wait until MCO had verified DOB details etc with the CRA, then would stream the info back via a portal in their software.

    The interesting thing now is that MCO appear to be creating an SSL web-site. Not sure why they are doing this. It could be a smoke-screen to make the authorities believe they are serious about security. It could be because they have lost control of the original site, or it could be something more sinister.     Hi grahamqat and all,

    I'm not sure the website has changed that much (but I'm no expert) - I took a print of the Helploan FAQ site pages on 1 August and the reference printed at the bottom is https://secure.helploan.co.uk/Faq.aspx . Definitely https.

    Interestingly the 'web application' section is very similar to the current one, although the 'Name on Account' box hasn't got the 'mandatory information' asterix, which presumably means you didn't need to provide an account name at that time, just the sort code and account number.
