Wooly, looks like you've had a wally on your case! The taxable income they've quoted you is exactly double Job A. This is rare, but not unheard of. What happens is someone has two jobs, with income A and income B.

The wally takes the figures and goes A plus B = 2A instead of A+B. Spookily in every single case of these I've heard of - 5 or 10 - the answer is 2A where A is the higher salary. Does this mean they sometimes come up with 2B, give massive tax rebates and the taxpayer just lies low? Who knows.

Your immediate task is to badger them like hell on how the 53,601 was calculated. Badger, badger and badger - do not accept jobsworthy drivel over the phone as an answer. This is one the phone helplines should be able to resolve quickly for you.
You really don't need to follow the advice of this posters drivel, he has an agenda against all HMRC employees. He's obviously so perfect he never, ever makes a mistake. Yet his business mustn't be doing that well as he continues to tout for business on here.

The answer is simple, HMRC have duplicated your income. Contact them and ask them how the final figure for 08/09 has been calculated.

As these calculations are done by a computer and are NOT seen by a human being before they go out to the taxpayer, there will be some that are incorrect due to various reasons.

What you need to do is contact HMRC on 0845 3000627. This problem should in most cases be able to be resolved on the phone during 1 call, but obviously without looking at your record there is no way to tell what is on there.

Some people would say that doubling someone's income and their tax bill was more than just a mistake, more like gross negligence. It's clearly caused great distress to Wooly and it would cause great distress to 99% of UK taxpayers I've ever met.

Will there be a heartfelt apology? Will there be any compensation for the negligence? Well if I tell you a pig's just flown past my window I'll leave you to judge my prediction on this one.

Also when a staff member of mine would say "It's the computer's fault" my answer was always "The computer did not program itself, how do we put it right?" behind every daft computer error there sits a wally somewhere I am afraid.

  • Today , I have received a notification that I have underpaid tax by £1560.0. I have worked for same company for 21 years and when I reached 60, 2 years ago, I reduced my weekly hours by half & took state & work pension. I rang Hmrc, spoke to a very disinterested persion who advised that this was my responsibility and that I should have confirmed that I was on the correct tax code, when I asked how I would and why I would have known to do this, she just reiterated that I was responsible. I cannot understand why my company would not have dealt with this or at least someone had let me know that I had to act on this.
    Any advice please
  • Its not your company's reposnsibility to sort out your tax, hard as it may be, it is down to you. Did it not occur to you that your pensions were taxable? Do you want to post the details on here so that someone can check the figures?

HMRC should have sent you a form to ask you about your pensions. Not only should they have done this automatically upon reaching 60 (assuming you're a woman), they should also have acted once they received details of you being a "new starter" on your occupational pension. Do you remember them sending you the form and did you complete it and return it to them. If so, you may well qualify for the extra statutory concession whereby if they havn't acted on information they possess, the tax may be waived. Obviously you need to prove they had the info, so a copy of the form you hopefully filled in would be useful as would any other correspondence from them. But you also need to check it is right - that means checking your P60 from employment, your state pension and also what, if any, tax was deducted from your occupational pension. Give us the figures if you wish and someone on here will check it over for you.

Par for the course, I'm afraid. Post the details on here - for each source of income post the taxable gross, tax paid and tax code. Then within minutes you'll at least know if the tax bill is correct or just one of the millions of howlers HMRC are sending out at the moment. Once we know whether or not it's right we can advise your next move. Keep calm and don't panic - even if it's right you should not be asked to pay this immediately. if the solution involves phoning HMRC, be prepared to make several calls before you find someone who has any notion of customer service.

  • HMRC have doubled your income - this mistake seems to be common with these underpayment cases. You simply need to ring the tax office and point ou tthat your income was £26k and not £53k - they will amend their calculations.
  • Hi all

Just thought this might interest you.

Today I received to P800T notifications from HMRC for years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. They state that I have underpaid my tax by £1750.

I knew this was a mistake immediately!
During 2009-2010, I worked for HMRC, I left in March 2010. For the Tax Year 2009-2010, the relevant P800 stated I had underpaid by £1200 whilst I was in HMRC employment, the taxable earnings figure is wrong, the tax paid is wrong, hence the tax owed is wrong.

I am yet to ring them about it, but, it just goes to show what a bad state of affairs HMRC are in, when they can't even get the tax details for one of its own employees correct! I religiously check my payslips and know a mistake when I see one.

I worked with the new PAYE system when it was introduced in 2009 and I can say that it is one of the worst IT integration and implementations I have ever seen, there are many mistakes with NI records... I could go on!

So on Monday, when I am off work, I will attempt to resolve this matter, however, I don't have much faith that it will be resolved too quickly!
