will we be entitled to any rent rebate??? Possibly and they do take your adult children's incomes into account for this one.

You can also claim online https://www.dwpe-services.direct.gov.uk/portal/page/portal/jsaol/lp even if you don't want to do it that way it gives you an idea of the questions they ask.

You need to be up to date with NI contributions and not as self employed so assuming the contract was for one of employment then you should be and will get 6 months of JSA.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Possible benefits:

    You: Jobseekers Allowance (contact Jobcentre)

Your wife: Working Tax Credit (contact HMRC)

Either / or: Housing Benefit (for help with rent) & Council Tax Benefit (contact your local council - even if the Jobcentre say you have made a claim at the same time as your JSA claim - saves potential trouble later).

HB/CTB may be affected if your sone and/or daughter are aged-over 18 and their apprenticeships are not counted as "apprenticeships" for benefit purposes.

If you have been paid off, that may also affect all of the above benefits. It depends on whether the pay off included pay-in-lieu-of-notice and/or holiday pay and/or redundancy. The latter counts as capital but if there is any element of the first two, that may count as income for periods determined under benefits legislation - it will be different for each type of benefit.

Main advice? Claim any benefit asap - delays mean you could lose money. If you are not initially entitled, ask why. If it is down to pay-in-lieu / holiday pay, claim again as soon as the "income period" has expired for the respective benefit(s). Even if the forms don't seem to contain enough info about "pay offs" from employment, I strongly advise you give full details / breakdowns of such payment(s).

NB: For HB/CTB, council's have discretion to accept claims up to 13 weeks in advance. This *could* mean if you are not entitled to, say, the first 8 weeks but you are thereafter, the council might decide you don't need to make a new claim. BUT, this is discretionary AND there are a couple of technicalities that mean, in reality, it's usually easier to say "no" to a claim leaving the claimant with the joy of reclaiming.

    Only if it's income based.

This assumes you're aged under 60.

The capital limit for nearly all means tested benefits is £16,000. Anything above £6,000 affects entitlement, but won't necessarily stop it. All capital is added together. So, any monies in a bank / building society / post office account must be added to your ISA. Most other investments also counts as capital (e.g. shares, income bonds, premium bonds etc). Cash savings also count.

Will the OP actually be entitled to JSA? Or would it just be CBJSA? Inwhich case...because he hasn't worked for 10 years he wouldn't qualify. Doesn't his wife work and earn too much?

I think you've read it wrong Duncombe.
