Cancelling a cheque for a parking fine

Hi all,
Recently my car was ticketed by a private parking company and without checking up with the laws I sent off a cheque to pay the fine. However I then did some googling and realised the fine was legally unenforceable and thus I swiftly had the cheque cancelled. This has all happened within the last week and the firm may not even have tried to cash the cheque yet. I have not as yet received any letters from them.
But now I've found out that cancelling cheques is notoriously difficult to justify as they considered a promise to pay and could open me up to a court case.
My reasoning for cancelling the cheque would be that the ticket was for the driver of the car while I am only the registered owner. I thought as the registered owner of the car I would be considered the one responsible for the 'offence'. Therefore I paid the cheque as the registered owner of the car and not the driver as is stated on the ticket.
Has anyone had any experience of this situation? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just ignore any letters from them, you have found out in time that these tickets are not enforceable, you don't have to justify anything with themExcel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?0 -
It depends which company it is and how lucky they're feeling.0

I would not worry about them taking you to court as their "business model" involves issuing a lot of tickets in the knowledge that a lot of people will not pay them, but there are still a lot of gullible people who pay up, hence the reason they survive in business.0

We have advised people to cancel a cheque to a PPC before, and have not had anyone post that they then got anything different except the usual letter-chains.
After all you just discovered it was an unenforceable scam and as the registered keeper there's no contract between you and them. I wouldn't worry if I were you.
A cheque is a promise to pay but I would still say you were right. I bet PPCs get a lot of cheques that bounce (due to people not having the funds), chances are the PPCs put any bounced cheques in the same old file marked 'scare 'em and they'll pay', then send out the usual dross.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
