Home Contents Overpayments.

Hello, i have recently discovered that i may have been paying for a contents insurance policy on a house that i moved out of three years ago.
I thought i had cancelled the policy but if this turns out to be true is there any way i can some of if not all of the money back or is it gone for good ?

My parents did this. They were significantly downsizing because my father was very unwell and it was just one of the things that was not so important at the time and it was forgotten for 6 years.

I was advised ‘tough luck’ by CAB when i asked them.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.....so I wrote a nice factual letter asking, not demanding, to my parent’s insurer and they kindly ported the cover to the new house and paid back the difference in premium.
I won’t say they were keen to do it, but I very gently pushed (because in the end it was my parents fault not that of the insurer) and they agreed.

My main argument was my parents no longer lived in that house and as such they could not have an insurable risk in it. This makes a policy null and void as you can’t insure something to which you would not suffer financially to lose.

This left the insurer with either voiding the policy or porting it and backdating to the current house. We agreed that voiding was bad and no one won, so porting and a payment to my parents was due.

    Cheque was issued same day.

The circumstances aren’t exactly the same as yours but thought it was similar enough to help.
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...
  • Thanks very much,
I have since found out after looking through some old documents that i found ( old shoe box under the bed ! ) that it is actualy a mortgage life insurance policy not contents, so i will get on to them today and see if we can sort this thing out.
    Thanks for your help.
