Paypal witholding payment

Im selling a lot of things on ebay to try to raise money to pay for the deposit on a rental house as our LL is selling up and if we cant find a deposit..we cant rent a house..and we are a family of 6 inc a tiny baby

Ive got 100 % feedback and also leave feedback for buyers..there have been a couple of occasions where they havent returned the compliment but they have been small low value items and I guess they just couldnt be bothered..Ive never had any strikes etc and no disputes on this acc..

Today I sold a pushchair on BIN..went to arrange the courier to discover that paypal is witholding the payment and Im not really sure why..It also says that paypal will not release the money for 21 days...I mean obviously there is no reason why the buyer shouldnt leave + feedback..but what happens if they dont bother? Do I kiss goodbye to my money?:(

If the buyer doesn't leave feedback then the other part of the message you quoted kicks in and after 21 days your payment is released.

However as this is an expensive item I assume it is going tracked. Once it shows as delivered there is no harm in phoning paypal to let them know as there is some anecdotal evidence that they may well release funds at that point, and if they don't you haven't lost anything by trying. Don't forget to put the tracking details into paypal as well when it is sent.

  • Thanks..it sold for £65 and is bulky so will be going by courier..I usually add the tracking details anyway so will do so..I cant obviously dispatch until Monday..but the buyer should have it by Tuesday
  • just out of curiousity will they withold all future payments?

The paypa l guidelines state that they MAY withold payments to new sellers / new account holders - they MAY also withold payments for items sold within a 'high risk ctaergory' - no where does there seem a definitive list of what these cats are! They also MAY withold payments for transactions out of the norm for that account (so if you usually get payments for £5 and then receive one for £400 (as an example)...and they also MAY hold any payment that they feel warrants an investigation)

So in short they MAY withold any payment they like and will fine a good excuse...ooops I mean reason for doing so!

I went through a patch approx 1 year ago when they witheld 1 in every 20 payments (all from the same longstanding ebay account and all within the same cat and price range as normal). When I queried it I was told it was random...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Hasn't happened at all for the last 10 months though:T

Im quite bemused that they are allowed to do this..

did you get all your payments and how long did you wait?

Im worried I will be essentially "giving away" my item and paying for the courier to send it
  • i have had payment holds on all payments into my paypal for over a month now, have 100% feedback and over 100 and only sell very low value items, ie. 99p. Is very annoying having to wait the 21 days as have noticed people cant be bothered to leave feedback!

I always got my money..sometimes on receipt of feedback (a couple of times I had to hassle them to check my feedback - I am a high volume seller, and it would seem often they could not be bothered to check - as it seemed to be a manual process). However I always got it on the 21 days.

I have been selling on ebay for 10+ years and have sold in many catergories at quite a high volume - My first payment hold was on 4 metres of lace trim which sold for a whopping £2.49 - I was clearing out my 'sewing box'... When I queried it (as I felt it unfair as a long standing seller), I was told the catergory was flagged as high risk! I can't believe that 'crafts' is particularly high risk but as a long standing paypal account holder I couldn't see why else it would be held:rotfl:
  • They only hold the money to keep it in your account in case the buyer has a problem and needs to start a dispute. Paypal are protecting themselves (alledgedly) from sellers who sell dodgy stuff, withdraw all the money and then when the disputes come in paypal have to refund from their own pocket.

I can see how they would need to be protected from me ripping a buyer off for £2.49 for some lace when I have thousands of pounds going through my paypal every week and always have a minimum balance of £300 in there!......
  • ahh thanks..as long as I get the money thats all that counts..I dont mind waiting 21 days tbh as its money for a deposit so it will stop me spending it!...I can see that people probably do get scammed with pushchairs..Ive been sold some lemons in the past..but Ive sold lots of high value things and loads of pushchairs over the years so was quite bemused
