broadband on wireless internet

my daughter has a laptop with lan card enclosed, she has gone to uni and now has a broadband with wire, how can she alter this to use internet again, they can provide cable in accommodation office but needs set up and dont know what else is needed,is it another card inserted into laptop or something easier than that?

Comments

  • who is providing the cable, halls of residence?

Your post is a bit confusing, can she get on the internet with the wired ethernet connection or not?

They need a wireless router, and she will need a wireless card unless there is one built into the laptop

Most modern laptops will have a LAN or ethernet port either on the side or the back.

The cable will just plug and and Windows XP should auto setup.

If not, your daughter will need to go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections and double left click on "local area connection".

Repairing the connection in here should hopefully resolve the issue.

From within the network connections window she could also disbale the current wireless internet function to stop the comp getting confused.

    Hope this helps

Does this happen on all web sites or just that one?

Double-click the Local Area Connection icon, then click Support tab. What does it say for IP address etc?

i shall have to ask her later and get back to u as she is in preston im at home, luckily if theres problems shes backj on thursday so hopefully we can get something sorted while shes here
  • If she is in a Hall of Residence then she may have to connect via a proxy server on the Uni's network. She should ask in the Students' Union for help; she won't be the first or only student to have had this problem.

  • This seems rather a tricky problem to sort out third hand.

As your daughter is paying a company for a service they really ought to be helping her. Failing that, maybe she could chat up a geeky fellow student?
