Vaillant part problem

We have a 20 year old vaillant combi which was running happily until British Gas stopped maintaining it and a new engineer serviced it. Now we have to switch the central heating on in order to get hot water. Can anyone suggest what the part is that causes this problem and whether we will be able to find a replacement part. The engineer is dying to instal a new boiler, we are not keen as we would like to save to pay to move the boiler to a new position so would like to try to struggle on with the old boiler for the time being. Can anyone suggest what the part is called so I can ring Vaillant direct to see if it is available.

It could possibly be the diverter.
Can you post the model and GC number please.0 -
It says on the metal plaque
GC4704401
VCW sine18 T3W FH
Combined heater
Cat 1 (then small figures) 2H(IN) Type C1
Thank you very much for assisting.

only old problem we had with the boiler was loss of pressure a couple of years ago. This was cured by:
filling loop installed
giving expansion chamber a good flush out
we were told by the BG engineer (good chap) to watch the pressure and if it started to fluctuate then we would need a new expansion chamber/pressure vessel. This has not been needed and we have found since this that there was a leak in the pipe between bathroom and boiler which may have caused the pressure drop?
Since then we have had no problems until the new engineer(we dont have a choice) said that we must have a new boiler!!! But it hadn't let us down until he came along!!!0 -
here's the parts list for it - but I can't find a fault finder for it though

I'm not sure this link is working properly, none of the parts come up though they are listed but nothing comes up when you click on them no identity no for the part etc.0

sorry about that - here ya go: http://www.partsarena.net/gas/catalogs/vaillant/
try that and scroll down to your boiler0 -
thanks for your help and thanks for the link. Now its a matter of second guessing the engineer into which part he actually needs; diverter valve or diaphragm (my guess from my research) and persuading him to fit it!!! I have left a message for him to call me, fingers crossed, see what he says0

We had this problem, as I recall it was the diaphragm, or rather it was the microswitch the diaphragm operates, replaced that and it now works fine0

thanks very much, this is a horrible problem as my engineer doesn't like being second guessed by a girl and he is keen to install a condenser, but I just don't want the disruption at the moment!!!! fingers crossed and I'll try to keep my diplomatic hat on!!!!0

I had a similar problem with boiler engineers:eek: they dont like to be told by a woman.
Try this forum they helped me out no end.http://www.diynot.com/
The enginner that came to mine wanted to put in a new heat exchanger. Told him to get stuffed it wasnt that it was something else, in the end it was the divertor valve. Fitted my self £60 for the part.0
