A question of sweetcorn

  • I always buy frozen - because it's on tap so to speak - you can just grab a handful out of the freezer ;) I find it to be cheaper, although I think people might prefer tinned as it's normally sold in salted water - giving it that taste :D
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

I had tried to grow my own sweetcorn this year but only one plant survived and the cob, which was looking great, just pretty much stopped growing once the really hot days had gone. I'd never bother buying fresh sweetcorn as practically all the sugar has turned to starch by the time you get to eat it.

Glad it wasn't just me, my corn stayed as baby corn, which tasted good but wasn't quite what I was after lol!

Thanks for all the replies, think I might stick with my tinned then all things considered. :)

Frozen corn cos it tastes much nicer. Tinned has a weird sweet taste that I don;t like.

This is the same in our family as well

I prefer the taste of tinned sweetcorn but find that frozen works out cheaper (but I don't have a lidl or aldi nearby).

I find if I'm making tuna sweetcorn sandwiches etc then tinned is much easier as you don't need to cook it. So I usually have both. Tinned for salads etc, and then frozen for adding to hot pasta dishes, shepherds pie etc where it will be cooked in with the food and so the flavour doesn't matter as much.

    :)

Ive always used tinned sweetcorn, even when I was a chef in the Army. They taste better ( I think ) and with tinned you can mix them straight into a salad or combine with tuna mayo. With frozen, you would have to wait untill they defrost. As for peas, Ive never used tinned peas. I prefer Fresh peas in the pods when they are in season, but do use frozen quite often.

However, you cant beat Corn on the cob, (on offer in tesco's at the moment)

    we prefer tinned

frozen tends to be mushy and watery i find
  • I don't cook frozen corn for very long, in fact I just bring it to the boil and drain (same with frozen peas). If I want sweetcorn for a salad I run it under a hot tap to defrost then a cold tap to cool down.
  • i get the frozen mini cobs, & nuke them in the micro'. the tinned i cut out the middle man & tip them down the loo lol
