Help with edf please!!!!!!!

hI

Was just looking for a bit of help please as im a bit confused.

I lived with my now ex partner in a house and EDF were our gas and electric providers. I split up with my partner and moved out the house in September last year. The account was in my name but i never changed it to his name when i left. My ex left the property in January this year so i called EDF to tell them we had moved out. They sent me two cheques of £60 saying i was in credit and now 8 months down the line i am receiving letters saying i owe them money.

I dont understand how this can be. i dont see how i can be in credit January and then suddenly in August i owe them money from Nov-Dec last year. I have asked them how and they said that they estimated my meter readings and in fact i used more but surely the meter readings should have been done when i closed the account and any debt paid and finalised then. Surely it is not my fault that they have only just "got round"been and taken meter readings.

If i have to pay i have to pay but because i dont understand why im not just going to hand over £200 its a lot of money too me

Any help will be appreciated

You are supposed to submit your own meter readings when you move out. If you didn't do this or your ex didn't do it correctly then errors like this can arise. The problem now is that you have no apparent evidence of what the meter reading was in January.
