incorrect bank charges

Back in 2005 i had an account with Nationwide with 2 standing orders, I went into branch to cancel these and they gave me an address to put it into writing. I wrote 2 seperate letters for each of the Standing orders, thinking they would be dealt with as I had opened a new accout with a different bank.
2 years ago I applied for a credit report to find I owed Nationwide over £500 because they had not cancelled, it is highly unlikley that 2 seperate letters did not make it in the post! I have send 3-4 letters since with no reply yet I cannot get credit! I have moved house several times since 2005 but everytime I go into branch they give me an address to wirite to but with no response! Please can I have some advice on what to do with this as I think the charges are incorrect and cannot afford to pay unnessasary charges.
Thanks in advance.:o

Sounds like they haven't recieved your notice of cancellation, and whilst you may think it is highly unlikely they didn't get the letters, IMO there is a chance. How are you sending the letters recorded or standard?

I just sent them standard post, Royal mail are not the best but surely 1 of the letters I have sent on different occasions must have made it there?

I don't know then. You could do a SAR to get all of your personal details and information, and that will include any correcpondence on the account, and any supplementary notes. However if they haven't recieved the cancellation, they can't act on your request.

  • Are you 100% sure that they are standing orders and not direct debits or recurring card transactions?

Sounds rather odd to ask you to write elsewhere to cancel a standing order
Seems even odder that you should then write 2 separate letters to canel them individually when you had originally gone into the branch to cancel both.

Anyway, they should have been able to do that on request either at the branch or via telephone. If you have internet banking, it could always be done yourself that way too.

Are you certain these were standing orders?
Why did it take 2 years to note they were not cancelled? You should have spotted this on the statements that Nationwide regularly issue.
