  • I Pay £10ph every other week for 3 hours and my gardner is brilliant! She is super (multi qualifications in the field) and trust her with the garden implicitely. We have a large veggie patch that she has maintained very well this year and planted/ate etc cabbages, brocolli, carrots, spuds, onions, toms, salad leaves, radishes. She has also planted raspberry canes, blackberries and other fruits for next year. She uses a hand mower as she is very earth friendly and organic with everything possible. When she is done, the garden always look neat and tidy and weed free. She also trims the bushes back.

We have one more visit from her to tide us through the winter and that will be it till March time.

I truly think its money well spent as I am disabled and OH is busy with work.

I am 9 miles from central london.

My dad is a gardener. he has over 40 years in the business. he has alot of experiance. he charges £10 a hour. he has so much work he can't keep up. but coming into winter it eases off a bit which he is glad of.
  • I pay £20.00 for two hours cutting and trimming of my lawn as I can no longer do it myself owing to creaky joints and osteo-arthritis.he is a lovely chap and I am jolly glad I have got him.My DGS tidies up for me as and when he can for a big plate of egg and chips ,but he does have lots of homework to do so it isn't often.
  • £10.00/hour must be the highest price. don't pay more.

    Why not??

Good gardeners work hard and know what they're doing! If you are unable to do the work yourself whether its due to poor health or lack of time, then £10+ is a bargain for your garden looking nice and the manual labour they put in!

  • I work as a gardener for a living, operating limited company with all associated costs such as public liability insurance etc, so my rate at £12.50 per hour has to go some way to covering these expenses. Of course you can get someone cheaper to do it on the side, but in my experience people like to see a level of accountability such as smart clothing, contact details (including a landline) on company transport etc. With these assurances in place then an hourly rate is not often called into question.

Professional gareners have many costs to fund such as the purchase and maintenance of equipment and insurance. Nobody pays for holidays or time lost through bad weather. They also need a level of skill that is often obtained by college courses.

It would be very difficult to make a living as a professional gardener charging £10 per hour. If you want a cash in hand unskilled person then you can pay peanuts.

  • I'm a gardener and I price for the work that needs doing. On-site I earn between £10 ph and £100 ph. Off site (travelling, advertising, meeting cusotmers, fixing machines etc) I earn nothing, If you are unhappy about paying, get the spade out yourself. If you don't because you realise how hard the work is, pay the guy what he wants or let your garden run wild.

I don't understand why people want it so cheap when they can't do it themselves.

£10 would be seriously cheap in Surrey for a one-man-band - more likely to have to pay £15-16, extra if you want rubbish taken away

A more commercial set up with a petrolmower may charge more but work out cheaper as they would be quicker
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

My mother has a handyman who also cuts grass, weeds, plants stuff and trims bushes. He has learnt from her and is now getting quite good, but in the early days he would often weed out good plants too. She pays him £7ph regardless of whether he's gardening, washing windows, painting fences or cleaning the car. He is adaptable and willing to pretty much do anything which is why he's so busy.

My neighbour is a gardener and she charges £10ph, but looking at her garden I don't think she actually has any qualifications and is probably better for garden clearance than garden design etc.
